Columbia Anti-Drug Efforts Not Good Enough For Trump

New tensions have emerged regarding issues with drug trafficking in Colombia that have ticked off US President Donald Trump. Trump has now threatened to deem Colombia as non-compliant in operations against the drug trade. President Trump criticized Colombia for its lackluster efforts against drug trafficking, and as a result, was causing problems with some of their Latin American allies in the fight against drugs.

 

Trump spoke on the 13th of September regarding a conscious decision to label Colombia as a non-compliant country, as a result of its failures to obey its responsibilities stated in international anti-drug contracts. Colombia has seen a steady increase in cocaine growth over the past few years, which is seen as breaking their contractual obligations as part of counter-narcotics operations. Trump later cited that he was keeping this threat up in the air as a result of the close working relationship the US has with Colombian Law Enforcement, and that he has seen the significant effort that they have been doing to work on the drug problem. Trump further warned that he would keep the option open but is expecting to see greater efforts in the reduction and eradication of cocaine production in Colombia.
